  19. Studies suggest that, as children, our divergence capability operates at a genius level, but our ability to think divergently decreases dramatically as we become adults. Yet, it’s important to be able to think both divergently and convergently (read about divergent and convergent thinking below). Here is the task for developing divergent thinking: think of as many uses as possible for everyday objects like a chair, coffee mug, or brick.
  20. One of the ways to develop convergent thinking is to solve riddles. Think out the following puzzles:
  • A man has married 20 women in a small town. All of the women are still alive and none of them is divorced. The man has broken no laws. Who is the man?
  • Marsha and Marjorie were born on the same day of the same month of the same year to the same mother and the same father - yet they are not twins. How is that possible?

There are two types of thinking: convergent (using logic) and divergent (using imagination). Convergent thinking focuses on coming up with the single, well-established answer to a problem. Divergent thinking is used to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions. When faced with a problem, we need to explore differing options (divergence). Afterwards, we narrow down our choices and decide on the best solution (convergence).

Emotional intelligence is being aware of your own feelings and those of others, regulating these feelings in yourself and others, using emotions that are appropriate to the situation, self-motivation, and building relationships
